Teeth: The First Bite (Teeth #1) - Chele Cooke
Release date - January 8 2015

Medical intern Thomas awakes in a blood-drenched basement and the realization that his life must change forever. After all, how can he practise medicine when the smell of blood turns him into a vicious killer?

Spencer thinks being a vampire is better than any teen movie made it out to be. Now he must train Thomas and make his mentor proud.

One mistake risks more than either are willing to lose, and a single broken law could turn them from predators to prey.

Give me a vampire novel and I'm happy, far too early exposure to 'Salem's Lot for me not to be a fan of our favorite bloodsuckers! I was intrigued by Teeth after reading the synopsis and realizing that we might get some scary vampires in this book and not members of the Sparkle Brigade. I wasn't disappointed, well I was slightly but that is just a minor niggle.

There are some great characters in Teeth and they don't hold back on the violence. Augustus is the oldest, with Spencer the experienced vamp, William is the renegade, the violent thug who enjoys killing (the other vampires create 'serial killers' to disguise these killing sprees and Thomas, the new guy. Who hasn't been quick to understand what he has become but soon makes up for it with a wholesale slaughter leading to Paige, his possible love interest, being turned too. She takes it much better than Thomas but maybe forewarned is forearmed. The vampires of Teeth are nothing like those of a certain vampire series, they don't twinkle and they burn if they're exposed to sunlight. I did like the subtle jibes about Twilight, it added some great touches of humor along with a grisly rendition of a children's nursery rhyme!

Augustus, Spenser, Thomas and Paige are connected by what's called the Sire bond, a nice twist on the creation of vampires and I loved that it wasn't something pleasant but could in fact be dangerous. There was some great introduction to the politics of Teeth's supernatural world and considering the book is only just under 160 pages long there's a lot crammed in. It's well written, fast paced and will keep you turning the pages until you get to the part where the werewolves are introduced and then the story ends. That's the bit that disappointed me as it was unexpected and quite jarring that all of a sudden there were wolves knocking doors down and threatening to kill everyone.

Werewolves aside I thoroughly enjoyed Teeth and will definitely read the next book, Meat. I'm looking forward to learning a lot more about the great vampire characters that we're introduced to in this book.

  1. Hey Fi,
Thank you so much for having me. I'm glad you enjoyed getting to know my little ragtag band.
I think 'makes up for it with a wholesale slaughter' might be my new favourite phrase about Thomas.
